I've long wanted to figure out what XmlSpec-based calendaring specs there are.
iCal seems significant because AppleComputers has apparently pushed out its
iCal with great success. One of the great features of iCal apparently is the ability to share calendaring info easily. The IcalSpec is the basis of that interop -- but as far as I can understand, it's not a XmlSpec format. Hence, as I learned from
Russell Beattie's analysis, there are also possible "rival" RdfSpec-based efforts, as well as RSS-Event based work.
See JonUdell's
The Calendar Fiasco for a detailed analysis of the mess we are in, why weblogs are a type of structured and unstructured data sharing mechanism.
