Running Notes on the Conference

People I've met

Mike Mattson of [WWW]CAREO

File sharing panel

2003-11-06 12:35:00 This is day 2 of the main conference. Being in an arena with several thousand other IT folks is a....I don't know...what type of experience. Not quite a sea of humanity since this group is far from a random group of folks.

When there are so many people in the audience, the reservations I have against getting on the network and blogging (as I'm doing now) fall away. We're all waiting for the next general session, [WWW]Panel on Peer-to-Peer File Sharing: Looking for Win-Win Solutions. I suppose the highlight (if you can call it that) will be the opportunity to be in the same room as Jack Valenti. I'll try to fair-minded and hear the guy out -- but I'm not terribly sympathetic to the RIAA's brutish and vicious attempts to clamp down on file sharing (while deeply exploiting the vast majority of recording artists). (I know that this statement isn't exactly what I'm thinking through -- and I want to fine-tune my thoughts.) Still, as Larry Lessig has said, Valenti is a charming speaker and incredibly effective spokesman for the entertainment industry. Stay tuned....

Interesting that Penn State is make a deal with Napster

Choking off P2P as a whole is bad solution since there are so many legitimate uses of P2P -- and these uses are growing every day.

Lots to investigate in this area. [WWW]Boycott-riaa.com any good? Some ideas I want to test: is the RIAA exploiting its creators? Is the RIAA pushing for changes to the copyright law that is inimical to academic creation and freedom?

It is amazing that there are so many new online music services emerging at this time. Why now and not before?
