Every once in a long while, I make a foray into learning more Chinese. It was exactly a year ago, during last year's Christmas visit home, that I spent a significant amount of time figuring out how to type out the names of my family members on a computer. The process I undertook was considerably less straightforward than I had hoped. The primary source of difficulty was my basic illiteracy in Chinese. I should note that literacy in Chinese itself is enough to get through the mess of stuff.
